my elimination diet

UPDATE August 16/2011: I have refined my list of tolerated safe foods combining the Paleo diet + low food chemicals + low-FODMAPs and it can be found here in my latest post.

***

Ok, as you are aware, I have been dealing with a lot of different symptoms in the last months. I first thought going Paleo would clear everything. Since then, I was diagnosed with a parasite infection (Blastocystis Hominis), took 2 kinds of antibiotics (TinidazoleMetronidazole), without any improvements in my symptoms. However, my last blood tests were showing improvements in many markers. I felt like eating some foods were making things worse for me, but couldn’t point my finger on it, until my gastroenterologist mentioned Fructose Malabsorption (FM). At first, I thought, well I don’t eat fruit nor sugar, so that cannot be the problem. However, I did my homework and found that FM is also linked to problems with ingesting fructans, sorbitol and mannitol (found in many vegetables).

day 23

today was Brussels sprouts & bacon day! =)

45 min walk

*** I had my breakfast quite early because I had an f/u appointment with my gastro-enterologist… was prescribed another type of antiobiotics (Flagyl) to take for the next 7 days to try to eradicate this parasite that is still causing symptoms… we’ll see how it goes, I don’t like antibiotics but I don’t have other option at this point. Meanwhile, I’ll continue to eat my daily dose of raw organic sauerkraut & take my yeast probiotics Floractive (known as Florastor in the USA).

:: 8am: sauerkraut + 2 free-range hard-boiled eggs + free-range bacon

:: 12h30pm: grass-fed beef  + onions + Brussels sprouts + turnips

:: 3h30pm: soaked almonds

::5h30pm: free-range chicken + free-range bacon + avocado + Brussels sprouts + leeks

day 21

*** Although my symptoms from my parasite infection had improved considerably, they came back last week. From what I can read on the internet, this is quite common as it is often difficult to completely get rid of these bugs… Anyway, I have a F/U with my doc this Wednesday. Meanwhile, you may notice that paI don’t have a lot of inspiration/motivation to cook so you may find that my food is a bit boring… but still tasty! =)

:: 11am: sauerkraut + 2 free-range hard-boiled eggs + leftover gluten-free free-range chicken sausage

:: 1pm: grass-fed beef + green beans + onions + tomato

::6pm: grass-fed beef + onions + turnip + Brussels sprouts + avocado

day 15

:: 10h00am: sauerkraut + 1 sl. free-range bacon + 4 free-range eggs

:: 12h30pm: grass-fed beef + Brussels sprouts + onions + turnips + a big handful of macadamia nuts

::5h30pm: grass-fed beef cooked in bacon fat + red bell pepper + mushrooms + avocado

*** no exercise today. I am not feeling very good. tired. no concentration. brain fog. depressed. and as soon as I eat, my belly swells 3 inches and stay swollen for the rest of the day. headaches, on and off. no pain though, just vague discomfort in my abdomen. is the parasite still causing problems??! I am getting very tired of this, whenever I seem to be getting better, it never seems to be over. Going for some blood work tomorrow and will see my gastro-enterologist for a F/U appt next week…

day 14

30-min resistance training at home

:: 12h00am: sauerkraut

:: 12h30pm: lettuce + free-range chicken + 1 sl. of free-range bacon + sun-dried tomatoes + 1/2 avocado + homemade mayo (made with free-range egg yolks + macadamia oil + avocado oil) + a small handful of soaked almonds

::5h30pm: grass-fed beef + Brussels sprouts + onions + turnips

::8h00pm: 2 free-range eggs

*** still taking many supplements to try to heal my intestines and get my gut integrity back while ensuring that the nasty parasites all 100% gone. Although I have been feeling a lot better, I still experience some brain fog, fatigue and abdominal distention (I look like I am 5-month pregnant after eating!) from time to time. Is it because I had a bit of hidden gluten over the weekend or is it because of the parasite? Only time will tell and I will try my best to not be ” glutened”  again so I can better understand what is going on.

  • L-glutamine + S. Boulardii (shown in the blue cup) on an empty stomach twice a day
  • 3 superenzymes with hydrochloride betaine + 2 ADP oil of oregano at each meal (only twice today since I skipped breakfast; shown in the pink cup)
  • 1 tsp. of wild fish oil a day
  • 1000 IU vitamin D

a fresh start

Hey! It’s amazing how things have changed in the last 3 weeks and I am happy I have taken some time to seek medical attention and recover. Since last time, I had:

  • a diagnosis of blastocystis hominis infection
  • 2 courses of anti-parasitic Tinidazole (2 g each time taken a week apart)
  • probiotics
    • yeast: Saccharomyces Boulardii
    • lactic acid bacteria: homemade sauerkraut
  • ADP oil of oregano from Biotics Reserch
  • digestive enzymes with hydrochloride betaine
  • L-glutamine
  • wild fish oil
  • vitamin D
  • magnesium
You can learn more about my symptoms and the doses I am using in my own personally-designed healing protocol: getting rid of blastocystis hominis.
Since I first started my Paleo challenge, I have remained gluten-free, grain-free, legume-free and dairy-free (with the exception of butter and cream), which probably helped. I want to take the next 30 days to continue healing my gut, regain my energy and lose the few pounds I put on + the ones I wanted to get rid in the first place.
.
Starting tomorrow and for the next 30 days, I will be posting my daily meals on this blog!
